The Best Three Essays on Marketing

I’ve had a career in marketing for nearly ten years. Lots of ups and downs. And boy-oh-boy I’ve read so many “flavour of the year” marketing and business books.

There are three essays that I’ve read, and re-read, and are still true to this day if you are marketing in any form on The Internet (as us old folks used to call it).

They’re timeless:

– 1,000 True Fans by Kevin Kelly (published 2008 – fifteen years ago) https://kk.org/thetechnium/1000-true-fans/

– It’s Not About You: The Truth About Social Media Marketing by Tim O’Reilly (published 2012 – eleven years ago )

– The Long Tail by Chris Anderson (published ***2004*** – nineteen years ago)
https://www.wired.com/2004/10/tail/ (paywalled, pretty sure if you know how to use wayback machine you can find a version, or just sign up)

When in doubt, ideas that have lasted ten years are much more likely to last ten more years, than the idea that’s come out yesterday that is generating a lot of FOMO.

(That said, don’t miss the Generative AI bandwagon. It will change a lot of things)
