I’m David. I’m sometimes known as The Data Chef.
What does that mean you ask?
It means I’m the Data Journalist & Data Storyteller who dives deep into the data to find the critical insight, and tell you an engaging and informative story. My previous roles have used this in B2B SaaS Content Marketing.
(Talk about niche right? Well it was my flexibility and adaptability that got me there.)
It also means I continually work and improve on the craft of writing, (applied for three writing competitions this year alone), and visualising data.
And don’t be fooled – this has required a level of data expertise I didn’t know I needed. But more on that later.
A few key highlights in my career:
- A data story that solves a critical problem for housing developers, leads to contributing over £14 million in revenue via demand generation for the UK’s biggest PropTech company.
- My thought leadership on the green belt and Energy Performance Certificates being featured on the BBC News at Six, The Times, Evening Standard, Metro, Property Week, and over 100 other press publications.
- Taking my presentation skills from events and webinars, to foreign television – breaking down the data behind Boris Johnson’s resignation to a Venezuelan audience of 2.2 million. (Yeah… that was fun.)
Creating compelling data content has meant I’ve upskilled as a data scientist. I’m comfortable with a stack of tools ranging from the humble spreadsheet to writing Python scripts, and running SQL queries. I once built an ad-hoc ETL process for a database of 30+ datasets of over 60 million records, in order to regularly update a data report and data story.
But enough about me – while I’m highly autonomous, my fondest memories are sharing in a team’s victories. I would not be where I am in my career if it wasn’t for the camaraderie and learnings I’ve received from mentors and team members.
Outside of work, when not socialising and enjoying what London has to offer, you can find me tucked into the latest issue of The Economist, or an epic fantasy or science fiction novel. Favourites are Wheel of Time, The Stormlight Archive, and anything Peter F Hamilton writes. I’m also on a two-year heroic quest to finish The Witcher Trilogy of games – I’m finally on the 3rd and final game.
This website is my digital home. A collection of my data stories, quick thoughts, and even those Instagram stories that some of you have heard of.
Reach out to me to talk about all things data journalism, I’m open to short term projects and hearing about full-time work opportunities.
